Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
What is 3D/4D Ultrasound?
4D ultrasound is a 3-Dimensional imaged viewed in motion over time. (Time is the fourth dimension in this case). Some ultrasound equipment manufacturers use the term 4D ultrasound as a marketing term. 4D ultrasound is the same as our 3D/4D Live.
What is the optimal time for a 3D/4D Ultrasound?
We perform 3D/4D ultrasounds anytime from 12 weeks. The earlier you come, the more of the baby you will see at one time, and the greater the baby's activity level. However, later in the pregnancy, the baby starts putting on fat and the facial features are best viewed at this time. If you plan on having only one 3D/4D ultrasound, we recommend coming at 28 weeks and up.
Do I need to contact my physician?
No.
Does insurance cover this ultrasound procedure?
Insurance will not cover your visit to Baby Waves.
Will you be able to determine if my baby is a boy or girl?
Yes! This is a specialty our sonographer has developed with many years of experience. However, we will only tell you the gender if you want to know. We determine gender at 14 weeks and up depending on your build. If we are unable to determine gender due position of baby or clarity of imaging, we will invite you back to re-verify at no extra charge.
Are the images as clear as the ones we have seen on the commercials?
Not every scan will be as clear. We use state-of-the-art technology, and our highly-trained sonographer will work to get the clearest images possible. There are many factors outside of our control, however. Some of the factors that impact the clarity of the image are:
1) The position of the baby. Sometimes the baby hides his face behind his hands or feet, or is snuggled up to the placenta. We do our best to encourage the baby to look at us, but sometimes a full face view is not possible.
2) Maternal tissue. Sound waves are absorbed by tissue. Therefore excessive tissue can result in fuzzier images. For fuller-figured moms, we recommend coming at 30 weeks and up to get the best images possible.
3) Amniotic fluid. The fluid helps to transmit the sound waves. We recommend keeping yourself well hydrated during your pregnancy. This promotes good health and may positively affect the quality of your images.
From time to time it is impossible to get clear 3D/4D images based on these factors. If our sonographer, feels that a return trip at a later date would yield better images, she may recommend that you come back for a second visit.
